CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Cleveland-Cliffs announced Thursday that it is shutting down a northern West Virginia tin production facility indefinitely and plans to lay off 900 workers after the International Trade Commission voted against imposing tariffs on tin imports. The trade commission also voted to stop a duty investigation into tin products shipped from South Korea. Cleveland-Cliffs said it will offer either severance packages or opportunities for workers in Weirton to be relocated to its other facilities. The trade commission ruling was shocking and made it “impossible for us to viably produce tinplate.”Goncalves added that the trade commission’s decision “is a travesty for America, middle-class jobs, and our critical food supply chains. Cleveland-Cliffs' tin facility in Weirton was once a nearly 800-acre property operated by Weirton Steel, which employed 6,100 workers in 1994 and filed for bankruptcy protection in 2003.International Steel Group bought Weirton Steel in federal bankruptcy court in 2003.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has approved President Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency's air pollution office just as the agency is set to finalize rules over climate-changing emissions from power plants and cars and trucks. Joe Goffman is a longtime EPA official who has headed the air and radiation office on an acting basis since Biden took office three years ago. Goffman's 2022 nomination for the air post, one of the top jobs at EPA, lapsed last year without a Senate vote. She called the Clean Power Plan “a direct shot at American energy production" and an attempt to shut down coal- and gas-fired power plants, including those in her home state. An EPA plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions from power plants is little more than the "second iteration of the Clean Power Plan,'' Capito said.

"I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life, and decided that I will not be running for reelection to the United States Senate," Manchin said in a video posted on X. CNN —House Republicans are not only facing resistance from within their own ranks to impeach President Joe Biden, they’re also getting a cool reception from another key constituency: Senate Republicans. Moreover, a number of Senate Republicans liken the Biden impeachment efforts to the two impeachments of then-President Donald Trump that they sharply criticized, even though the situations are markedly different. The issue is just the latest divide between House and Senate Republicans, who are deeply split over spending and their posture toward Ukraine. “I don’t think that Speaker McCarthy’s position,” Cornyn said when asked about his personal view about a potential impeachment inquiry. “I don’t think the House particularly cares what members of the Senate think,” he told CNN.

“I personally would like to see the inquiry happen (this) week,” the Georgia Republican told CNN. The two chambers are hundreds of billions dollars apart and divided over controversial social issues that House Republicans have tacked on to their spending bills. “I am against a continuing resolution in any form or fashion,” Gonzales told CNN. “There is a constitutional and legal test that you have to meet with evidence,” Johnson told CNN.
